205) Question :
What is the ROI [return on investment] for SEO activities? Can you give any examples? Another related question might be "How do you build a business case for doing SEO?"

Answers:

This is akin to asking what is the ROI for usability. Speed is a key component of usability. Small improvements in speed can take critical pages below typical attention thresholds, and dramatically lower bail-out rates and abandoned shopping carts. I talk about this in the book, but compression alone can save 30-50% in size and bandwidth costs. Webmasters who have employed compression and optimization typically save 30 to 50% off their bandwidth costs, and retain more customers, and have improved conversion rates.

Content sites generally charge a fixed amount per click rather than using a bidding system. ‘Pay per click’ advertisements are commonly displayed on websites and search engine results.‘Pay per click’ is an approach that differs from the ‘pay per impression’ methods used in television and newspaper advertising.

222) How can you write a better Ad text for a campaign? What do you understand by quality score? What's it's importance?

Answer:
An ad text should attract attention. It should be relevant to page keyword and catchy. Quality score is the score attained by keyword/s used for your campaign. The higher the quality score, the lower you pay search engine when someone clicks on it and better if performs.

223) What is good : - 10 sales out of 100 hits for a campaign or 10 sales out of 300 hits for a campaign ? Assume that in both cases you are spending £85 .Think and answer !

Answer:
Well if we take consideration of ROI, I think it's better when we can get 10 sales out of 100.

But as you mentioned above that in both cases you spent just £85 to achieve it. I will say that it's better to have 10 sales out of 300. At least client is making same profit + 200 extra hits + new potential customers . This might increase sales sooner or later.

224) There are tons of metrics in AdWords – what are your top three key performance metrics in AdWords and why?
Answer:
My top three performance metrics are:
Quality Score – The most important thing in AdWords is to be relevant (give the user the right answer to his query) and the metric that indicates relevancy is Quality Score. I pay close attention to Quality Score and focus on getting higher scores (by increasing CTR, optimizing keywords, ads and landing pages). It's also very important because with high Quality Scores I pay less per click. I always try to get higher Quality Scores than 6.
Conversion Rate – When a user clicks on an ad he must take some action on the site. You always want to make sure your click dollars are not being wasted. To increase conversion rates I try to include a call to action in my ads and set up proper landing pages.
Click Through Rate (CTR) – CTR is very important because it shows my ads are relevant, clickable and my Quality Score is higher (which means I'm paying less for the clicks). To increase CTR I always try to include keywords in the ad text and study the "See search term" report to include some negative keywords. I highly recommend DKI (Dynamic Keyword Insertion) which bring great results for me and increases my CTR and Quality Scores.

225) Can you describe your AdWords management strategy? How do you set your campaign objectives, and how do you know what’s realistic or not? What about your AdWords management workflow? When you’re doing your account optimization work, how do you decide what to do next? How do you prioritize your work?

Answer:

I can divide my AdWords campaign management into three phases. In the first phase I do a lot of research. I communicate a lot with my clients in order to determine what exactly they want to achieve. I must have a full understanding of their products or services and their business. I research their market, competitors and, most importantly, target audience. In that phase we also determine campaign expectations and goals.

In the second phase, I create campaigns based on my client's goals. I approach my campaign organization solely on the basis of the goals of my client. If the campaign goal is to increase revenue and high return on investment, you must organize your campaign differently than if the goal is more traffic on the site (for example).

Another important question is if the client wants to advertise on Google Search Network or Google Display Network – since those two networks function in different ways, the organization of those campaigns is also different. When I’m organizing campaigns for Google Search, the first thing I do is thorough investigation and categorization of keywords. I create tightly themed ad groups. How many ad groups do I have? As many as necessary, as long as I stay relevant.

Here are some more techniques I use in this phase:
I create ad groups of related keywords with exact mach only keywords, and ad groups with broad and modified broad keywords.
When I’m creating ads I use DKI as much as possible, because I realized that people want to see keywords they type in search box in the ad – that makes ads more clickable.
I bid based on my client budget and goals (if the goal is traffic on the site I use CPC, if it is conversion I use CPA, if it is branding I use CPM bidding).
I focus on increasing Quality Score so I pay less for the click.
Location extension is a must.
I also implement sitelinks.
I do location targeting and ad scheduling based on client needs.

In campaigns for the Display Network:
I always do some research with Ad Planner and find out where is my target audience.
I use the contextual target tool which is great for organizing contextual targeting campaigns in GDN.
I create tightly themed ad groups with 3-5 keywords.
I usually create a "discovery campaign" where I detect the best performing placements, then exclude them from the "discovery campaign" and put them in new display campaign with only the best performing placements.

The third and final phase is testing and optimizing. I always try to improve my campaign results. I regularly redefine my keywords. When I detect the best performing keywords, I usually remove them from that ad group and put them in a new ad group with ads created just for that new ad group. I often research the "See search terms" report where I detect new and negative keywords. I always test my ads and I try to have at least two ads in one ad group, where I replace the worse ad with a new ad. I’m especially focused on improving Quality Score, conversions, ad positions and bids. Testing and optimizing is one of the most important things in my campaigns. When you create your campaigns the job is just getting started with a lot of testing and optimizing. I carefully analyze campaign results, detect what part of the campaign needs further improvement and that’s how I know what to do next in my account.

226) What is the difference between search engine marketing and Internet marketing?

Search Engine Marketing is specific to marketing your brand/service/products through search engines. It can be in the form of organic search results where landing pages are aimed for higher ranking, or in paid search results, where ads are aimed to display at maximum exposure for targeted keywords at minimal cost possible.

Internet marketing covers a broader range of channels. It includes search engine marketing, email marketing / EDM, social media, and so on.

227) How do you differentiate paid search programs of Google, MSN and Yahoo?

One way to differentiate these three are through presentation of strengths and weaknesses of each.

Google AdWords
Advantage: Most robust and corners majority of all paid search traffic
Disadvantage: Due to its big number of advertisers, cost per click is generally more expensive

Yahoo! Search Marketing
Advantage: Lower pay per click cost compared to Google AdWords
Disadvantage: Way behind Google AdWords in terms of reporting features

MSN adCenter
Advantage: Studies show that users of adCenter are more likely result to conversions
Disadvantage: Weakest PPC interface compared to Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search Marketing

228) How do you describe building your keyword list?

Building a list of keywords used for any organic or paid search campaign should be systematic:

Identify your audience
Who are the target audience of this campaign? What would they probably be using to look for my products and services? Knowing your audience is the first sign of a successful paid search campaign.

Review your existing offerings
Based on what search terms people are using, do I have these terms? What are the possible landing pages? Does my website have content voids?

Look at your competitors
Look at competitors and analyze how they position themselves. Are they using the same terms as I do? Broader or more specific?

Check web analytics results
History will be recorded on web analytics tools: keywords used, their effectiveness in driving sales or leads and other useful information. Such data should give us idea on which keywords yielded better ROI.

Expand keywords using various tools
Based on keywords gathered so far, expansion is made possible through various tools available: Google AdWords keyword tool, WordTracker, KeywordDiscovery, and so on. From this big list, we can sort, prioritize and group these keywords according to importance, timing or other segmentation methods.

229) What’s your methodology in creating ad copies?

This question wants to find out how you would come up with ad copies. Are they compelling and paint an accurate picture of the intended message? You may answer it based on the following guidelines:
• Find out why your ad copy should be more effective than others
• Your ad’s ability to answer basic questions
• Testing the ad copy; we’ll never know how effective it is until we put it to the test

230) Google’s Quality Score and what role does it play in ranking?

While I do not expect Google’s textbook answer,, I am hoping the candidate understands the basic concept behind QS (clickthrough rate + other factors) and that QS is part of the Ad Rank formula where:

Ad Rank = CPC bid X Quality Score.

Their ability to explain Quality Score and Ad Rank to me in plain English is something I pay very close attention to.

Quality Score for Google and the search network is a dynamic metric assigned to each of your keywords. It’s calculated using a variety of factors and measures how relevant your keyword is to your ad group and to a user’s search query. The higher a keyword’s Quality Score, the lower its cost-per-clicks (CPCs) and the better its ad position.

231) How will you solve canonicalization issue or what is .htacess file?

.htacess file is used to solve the canonicalization issue of a website. It may happen that the home page of the site may take several urls like http://www.example.com/ orhttp://www.example.com/index.html or http://example.com/ . The search engines might treat these url as different and may divide the link juice gained by having various backlinks made with any of these 3 urls. The link juice gets divided between these three urls equally. .htacess file is created to have a single url of the home page so that the link juice is passed onto single url.

232) What methods would you apply for decreasing the loading time of a website?

245) Questions : Explain various steps that you would take to optimize a website?
Answer :
A. 1. Interview website owner or webmaster to get a good grasp of the site’s purpose and goals.

2. Perform a keyword analysis to find best performing keywords that should be used for that site and for individual pages of the site.

3. Analyze site content to determine usage of relevant keywords and phrases.
This includes visible text as well at titles, META tags, and “alt” attributes.

4. Examine site navigation.

5. Determine the existence of robots.txt and sitemap and examine those for effectiveness.

6. Make recommendations for changes needed for the site and each individual page.

246) Question : What is the difference between Indexing and Crawling?
Answer :
1) When the Search Engines come to your website and read the data or find the data, this process is called crawling.

2) Whenever Search Engines come to your website, whichever page they crawl, they take a copy of that page with them and save it on their server. This process is done by the search engine is called Indexing

247) Question : On the Home Page, I have 10 images, from which I want the Google Spider to crawl only 5 and remaining 5 should be hidden from the Spider? What will I do?
Answer :
I will make a separate folder in the root file and put all those five 5 images which I don’t want the spider to crawl and then add the folder in the Robots.txt

248) Q: I have some pages in the supplemental results that are old now. What should I do?
A: I wouldn’t spend much effort on them. If the pages have moved, I would make sure that there’s a 301 redirect to the new location of pages. If the pages are truly gone, I’d make sure that you serve a 404 on those pages. After that, I wouldn’t put any more effort in. When Google eventually recrawls those pages, it will pick up the changes, but because it can take longer for us to crawl supplemental results, you might not see that update for a while.

249)Question : If the company whose site you’ve been working for has decided to move all of its content to a new domain, what steps would you take?

Answer :
I would update the old site with permanent redirects to to new page for every page. Then I would attempt to remove old content from the major search engines to avoid duplicate content issues.

250) Q: Let’s talk about the inurl: operator. Why does everyone think that if inurl:mydomain.com shows results that aren’t from mydomain.com, it must be hijacked?

A: Many months ago, if you saw someresult.com/search2.php?url=mydomain.com, that would sometimes have content from mydomain. That could happen when the someresult.com url was a 302 redirect to mydomain.com and we decided to show a result from someresult.com. Since then, we’ve changed our heuristics to make showing the source url for 302 redirects much more rare. We are moving to a framework for handling redirects in which we will almost always show the destination url. Yahoo handles 302 redirects by usually showing the destination url, and we are in the middle of transitioning to a similar set of heuristics. Note that Yahoo reserves the right to have exceptions on redirect handling, and Google does too. Based on our analysis, we will show the source url for a 302 redirect less than half a percent of the time (basically, when we have strong reason to think the source url is correct).

251) Q: So when you say www vs. non-www, you’re talking about a type of canonicalization. Are there other ways that urls get canonicalized?

A: Yes, there can be a lot, but most people never notice (or need to notice) them. Search engines can do things like keeping or removing trailing slashes, trying to convert urls with upper case to lower case, or removing session IDs from bulletin board or other software (many bulletin board software packages will work fine if you omit the session ID).

252) Q: If I want to get rid of domain.com but keep www.domain.com, should I use the url removal tool to remove domain.com?
A: No, definitely don’t do this. If you remove one of the www vs. non-www hostnames, it can end up removing your whole domain for six months. Definitely don’t do this. If you did use the url removal tool to remove your entire domain when you actually only wanted to remove the www or non-www version of your domain, do a reinclusion request and mention that you removed your entire domain by accident using the url removal tool and that you’d like it reincluded.

253) Q: I noticed that you don’t do a 301 redirect on your site from the non-www to the www version, Matt. Why not? Are you stupid in the head?
A: Actually, it’s on purpose. I noticed that several months ago but decided not to change it on my end or ask anyone at Google to fix it. I may add a 301 eventually, but for now it’s a helpful test case.

canonicalization, www vs. non-www, redirects, duplicate urls, 302 “hijacking,” etc.

254) Q: What is a canonical url? Do you have to use such a weird word, anyway?

A: Sorry that it’s a strange word; that’s what we call it around Google. Canonicalization is the process of picking the best url when there are several choices, and it usually refers to home pages. For example, most people would consider these the same urls:

www.example.com
example.com/
www.example.com/index.html
example.com/home.asp
But technically all of these urls are different. A web server could return completely different content for all the urls above. When Google “canonicalizes” a url, we try to pick the url that seems like the best representative from that set.

255) Q: So how do I make sure that Google picks the url that I want?

A: One thing that helps is to pick the url that you want and use that url consistently across your entire site. For example, don’t make half of your links go to http://example.com/ and the other half go to http://www.example.com/ . Instead, pick the url you prefer and always use that format for your internal links.

256) Q: Is there anything else I can do?A: Yes. Suppose you want your default url to be http://www.example.com/ . You can make your webserver so that if someone requestshttp://example.com/, it does a 301 (permanent) redirect to http://www.example.com/ . That helps Google know which url you prefer to be canonical. Adding a 301 redirect can be an especially good idea if your site changes often (e.g. dynamic content, a blog, etc.).

257) Question: What is Canonical Issues?? Is it Important for SEO?

Answer:

If Google discovers your webpages via multiple URLs, it is going to declare them as duplicate. Hence, you need to tell Google about your preferred URL by adding rel=”canonical to your preferred version:
Example being
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/product.php?item=swedish-fish" />

This will give an answer to your canonical related ques

258) Question: How to Solve Canonical Issues for Websites for SEO ?

Answer:
There should be a way to solve this canonical issue..

301 redirection with .htaccess file is the solution.

Create a .htaccess file. Open Notepad. Name it as .htaccess.
Paste the below code into the notepad. You have to customize the code by replacing your own domain name. And in place of index.html you have to replace it with your home page file name. Another thing is, you have to decide whether you want www version or non www version of your cannonical url. Both are fine. But the common trend is www version. If you want non www version of your domain name just remove the www. portion from the code.

260) Duplicate Content Filter Makes Dynamic Sites Victims and Some Fixes

You must be very careful if you develop dynamic sites and assure that there is never a way to reproduce the same page more than once or give multiple URL paths to get to the same page.

Fixes are:
1) Determine the pages
2) Determine if a robots.txt can be used
3) Use a NOFOLLOW tag when in doubt
4) Never use different URLs for the same page
5) Assure mod rewrites are working properly and there is no way to get there dynamically, if there is disallow access via robots.txt.
6) Robots.txt the metas.
7) If else statements if changing currencies that will add a robots “noindex” to the page. Go crazy and obsess over other possibilities.
9) POST OTHER SOLUTIONS IN THE COMMENTS.
10) Create new named URLs for the old pages after removing the duplicate pages. 301 redirect the old pages.

261) Question: Have any strategies to get lost Google+ local reviews come back to a local business that changed its location?

Answer:
There have been so many issues with reviews since Google+ Local was rolled out, I decided to make this Comigraphic. Really, if the reviews being lost aren’t spam, then it comes down to the way business information is stored in Google's system. Your business Name, Address, and Phone number make up your online identity to Google. When one of these things changes then what can happen is Google starts thinking that there are two identities and sometimes your data (reviews or citations) will be stored with the wrong identity. Here is Google's advice on moving:

If a business no longer exists at a location, you can mark it as closed or moved on Google Maps. Follow these steps to have the listing moderated:
1. Find the closed or moved business on Google Maps.
2. Use the Report a problem link from the Google Maps result.
3. Select Place is permanently closed option.
4. If the place has moved to a new location, give us the new location’s information in the comment box.
5. If your business has moved and you manage the business’s new location, you should add the new location as a separate listing in your Places dashboard.

Word is that if you move, you lose your reviews. There is a discussion on Linda's forum on this very subject where a couple of Googlers dropped in. In the example that is mentioned in the forum, the old business listing shows the old reviews and says it has moved locations and shows (and links) to the new address. The reviews have transferred so they exist on both listings as well. Hopefully this means that following Google's advice will help you keep your reviews, but sometimes the same path leads to different outcomes in the Googleverse. My best advice is never change your name, never move your address, never change your phone number.

262) Question: Do webfonts slow down page load?

Answer: Each webfont is around 50k in size, so overuse of webfonts can affect page load. As webfonts are often used to replace graphics, the end result can be that webfonts could easily decrease page size. My advice is to evaluate the file size during the development process and keep to your existing page size thresholds. Obviously it makes no difference if bandwidth is used downloading a graphic or a webfont.

263)What's more valuable to the modern marketer ?

1. Banner impression
2. Social referral to a friend (share)
3. Billboard view
4. Print media reader
5. Radio listener
6. Other (Specify)

264)What are the benefits and disadvantages of social media marketing? You can also suggest your ideas ......
Answer:
1) You can connect directly with your customers and get their feedback/suggestions for improving your products or services.
2) You can make your customers feel valued as human beings, not just dollars and cents, and improve their experiences with your business.
3) You can use social media (such as Twitter and Facebook) to advertise upcoming events or special offers that you think your customers would enjoy.
4) Social media has a wide reach, so your customers may even spread your message for you if they like it.
5) You can send out your message at times when you think your customers are most likely to see it, and measure the effectiveness of your message with other tools.
6) Good Social Media information is essential to creating and sharing your Brand and with a weekly effort of 2-4 hours to schedule posts and tweets can be the best use of new business development time and money
7) The main benefit is that they offer remote, real time and low cost engagement between your brand/company/product and your audience.

Disadvantages:

1) If one of your customers (someone who isn't a chronic complainer, but a good customer who you want to keep) complains about you online, that complaint may be seen worldwide. Best thing to do: Acknowledge that customer immediately and act fast to fix the problem.
2) If you ever make an error (such as an accidental misspelling or mouthing off to a customer online -- I've seen both happen), it's seen worldwide and may even be picked up by news channels. Fix it fast.
3) The main disadvantage is that they gradually require deeper and deeper insight and interpretation capacity (aka we become social scientists) to be able to use them wisely and measure results.
4) a disadvantage is a customer's complain is seen worldwide. Companies need to respond to customers. I think the percentage is 70% of companies do not respond to customers on social media.

265)Why You Need To Treat Your Social Media Strategy Like Your Content Strategy?

In a typical organization, the social media tweets away in one department while content writers toil away in another. The social team links to fresh content, sure… and that’s about the extent of their interactions. But, at the end of the day, what you post and share on social media is content, and it’s time we start treating our social postings with the same amount of gravity as we do our content.

266)What counts as a high-quality site?

Our site quality algorithms are aimed at helping people find "high-quality" sites by reducing the rankings of low-quality content. The recent "Panda" change tackles the difficult task of algorithmically assessing website quality. Taking a step back, we wanted to explain some of the ideas and research that drive the development of our algorithms.
Below are some questions that one could use to assess the "quality" of a page or an article. These are the kinds of questions we ask ourselves as we write algorithms that attempt to assess site quality. Think of it as our take at encoding what we think our users want.
Of course, we aren't disclosing the actual ranking signals used in our algorithms because we don't want folks to game our search results; but if you want to step into Google's mindset, the questions below provide some guidance on how we've been looking at the issue:

267) Would you trust the information presented in this article?

Is this article written by an expert or enthusiast who knows the topic well, or is it more shallow in nature?
Does the site have duplicate, overlapping, or redundant articles on the same or similar topics with slightly different keyword variations?
Would you be comfortable giving your credit card information to this site?
Does this article have spelling, stylistic, or factual errors?
Are the topics driven by genuine interests of readers of the site, or does the site generate content by attempting to guess what might rank well in search engines?
Does the article provide original content or information, original reporting, original research, or original analysis?
Does the page provide substantial value when compared to other pages in search results?
How much quality control is done on content?
Does the article describe both sides of a story?
Is the site a recognized authority on its topic?
Is the content mass-produced by or outsourced to a large number of creators, or spread across a large network of sites, so that individual pages or sites don’t get as much attention or care?
Was the article edited well, or does it appear sloppy or hastily produced?
For a health related query, would you trust information from this site?
Would you recognize this site as an authoritative source when mentioned by name?
Does this article provide a complete or comprehensive description of the topic?
Does this article contain insightful analysis or interesting information that is beyond obvious?
Is this the sort of page you’d want to bookmark, share with a friend, or recommend?
Does this article have an excessive amount of ads that distract from or interfere with the main content?
Would you expect to see this article in a printed magazine, encyclopedia or book?
Are the articles short, unsubstantial, or otherwise lacking in helpful specifics?
Are the pages produced with great care and attention to detail vs. less attention to detail?
Would users complain when they see pages from this site?
Writing an algorithm to assess page or site quality is a much harder task, but we hope the questions above give some insight into how we try to write algorithms that distinguish higher-quality sites from lower-quality sites.

268)Top SEO Skills Needs In 2013?
A new Threadwatch post is asking what skills does an SEO need in 2013 to make them a "sharp" SEO?

2013 is a lot different than five years ago when it comes to SEO. Think about what we have much more of now. We have social, deeper localization, Panda, Penguin, EMD, and tons of other Google updates. We have analytics certification, we have content marketing, conversion optimization, and so so much more. It is not just about creating as much content as possible and as many links as possible.

We have a post from 2007 where most the skills we listed were technical skills, like HTML, SEO tool knowledge, etc.
But in today's SEO world, I would assume that the technical skills are a prerequisite. Of course you need to build sites that are search engine friendly, without canonical issues, that don't have duplicate content issues, that have the proper markup throughout the sites including rich snippets. But now you need to know more about analytics, more about social media, more about content marketing, and even more about link bait.

And of course, we have to deal with Panda, Penguin and the other Google algorithms.

1. The dark arts of SEO may be dying off but SEO will never die. One most important skill in my opinion an SEO expert should have is to learn how to use the patterns and practices in favor of diverseness and natural appearance. A good SEO must think like the Coast Guard - Semper Paratus!

2. The ability to produce great content.
Don't think that producing great content is essential. It would be nice, yes, but you can be an awesome SEO pro without it.
3. if SEOs will study "analytics, more about social media, more about content marketing, and even more about link bait".

4. Most of the "webmasters", you're referring to, are out of business because they don't know basics. They could hire SEO when the internet was full of quick money opportunities. No more quick money. The webmaster shall know basics by him/herself, if she/he wants to be in this business. Sorry, but there is just no money for the SEO specialists in this business.

269)Question: What is the best way to maximize the frequency of crawling of your website by search engines?

Answer – Frequently adding new, original and quality content on the website.

Note: If you have any suggestion then comment it.

270)What is the Panda update and which is its current version?

Answer – Panda is a search algorithm update by the Google to take on the content farms, low quality websites and the websites getting low quality backlinks, Google removed a lot of the webpage from the higher search index during this update and Google Announces 24th Panda Refresh; Not Related To January 17th | January 23, 2013…

271)How to Sell Online Advertising to Print Advertisers?

Answer:
Dan Ambrose, Advertising Sales Consultant and speaker at the upcoming Mequoda Summit says:

“Advertising sales is all about salesmanship. Greater sales skills will make more and bigger sales. And a media company that understands and executes the sales and marketing of advertising with excellence will gain sales and market share over time, growing nearly without limits.”

In other words, it’s a toss up. So get to know your advertisers as best you can before offering them your best deal on an advertising package. Which hopefully, will include what we’ve listed below.

Three Steps on How to Sell Online Advertising to Print Clients

1. Offer them a package.
They are already buying ads in your print product, so the next logical step is to offer them ad space on your website for an increased rate as a “print + online package”. This shouldn’t be a hard sell, so long as you follow the next two steps.

2. Let them be more active. Advertisers get bored with “text links” and “banner ads” very quickly, so come up with new ways for them to increase leads by letting them become more active in your marketing. Let them sponsor contests, interview them for your subscription products, so on and so forth.

3. Offer them a sponsorship opportunity. If you’re looking to really build out your website, offer them the chance to sponsor sections of your website. Sites like RCRWireless.com let advertisers sponsor whole topics, while others like AutoTrader.com let them sponsor online tools. Still, some, like Computerworld.com offer their advertisers “Zones” where they can give away a free report in exchange for email leads that go directly to the advertiser. Everyone has an opinion on online advertising… what’s your take? How have you convinced advertisers to spend more money? Let us (and our readers) know in the comments…
